One year sentence for attempted contraband

A man was sentence to a year in jail for attempting to bring methamphetamine into Lemon Creek Correctional Center in Juneau.

Dennis J. Morris Jr., 36, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge — attempted promoting contraband in the first degree — and was sentenced Wednesday before Juneau Superior Court Judge Louis Menendez.

He was originally indicted in October on two felony counts for the conduct on Aug. 7. A plea deal reached with prosecutors reduced one of the felonies to a misdemeanor, and the other charge was dismissed.

Man pleads guilty to assault

A man pleaded guilty to third-degree assault, a felony, in connection to a domestic disturbance at a residence in October.

Jonathan K. Torres, 25, changed his plea Tuesday in Juneau Superior Court before Judge Philip Pallenberg. Sentencing is scheduled for March 7.

Prosecutors said Torres placed another person in fear of imminent serious physical injury by choking her and brandishing a knife to threaten her.

Torres was indicted by a grand jury in November on three felony counts of assault and one felony count of criminal mischief.

A plea deal reached with prosecutors calls for the sentence to be determined by the judge, but has a cap on two years to serve. The deal dismisses the other charges against him.

Man sentenced for oxy possession

A 25-year-old Juneau man found in possession of oxycodone was sentenced to serve 270 days in prison with 180 days suspended, which is 90 days to serve.

Juneau Superior Court Judge Philip Pallenberg imposed the sentence for Zachary M. Ison on Monday and required him to be on probation for three years after his release.

Prosecutors said a Juneau Police Department officer picked Ison up on an outstanding warrant on April 7, 2012, and found two yellow tablets in Ison’s pocket during a search. The tablets were sent to the crime lab and tested positive for oxycodone, District Attorney Brower said.

Brower noted the warrant was issued after Ison failed to complete community work service in an earlier 2009 case.

Ison was originally indicted for felony drug misconduct in September, but that charge was reduced to a misdemeanor in a plea deal reached with prosecutors.

Brower said there was no indication Ison sells drugs or if he has a substance abuse problem.

Ison also received 30 days to serve for failing to appear in court in December, a misdemeanor offense.

Man sentenced to eight months for misdemeanor assault

A man was sentenced to serve eight months in prison for injuring another person with a kitchen knife during a Halloween party at a Switzer Village residence.

Juneau District Court Judge Thomas Nave imposed the sentence for Ivan P. Sabon, 39, late last month.

Prosecutors said in an affidavit that Sabon cut the right index finger of another person when they began arguing in the kitchen while they were cooking. The affidavit states Sabon attempted to stab the other person, but he knocked the knife out of Sabon’s hands. Alcohol was involved.

Sabon’s attorney, Public Defender Timothy Ayer, told the judge the cut finger was the only injury.

Sabon was indicted in November on one count of third-degree assault, a felony. That charge was reduced to fourth-degree assault, a misdemeanor, in accordance with a plea deal.
