14-year-old being held as suspect in Kake homicide

A suspect has been identified in connection to the death of a 13-year-old girl in Kake, according to authorities investigating the homicide.

Deputy Commander of the Alaska Bureau of Investigation’s Major Crimes Unit Rex Leath said in an online dispatch that a 14-year-old boy from Kake is being held in custody.

The boy’s name is not being released by ABI since he is a minor.

Authorities have not said what charges are pending against him, again citing the fact that he is a minor.

The boy was placed into custody by Alaska State Troopers and is being transported to a Department of Juvenile Justice holding facility in Ketchikan.

The body of 13-year-old Mackenzie Howard was found the night of Feb. 5 in the entryway of a Kake church.

Investigators with ABI have remained in Kake since that time, investigating the death as a homicide.

An autopsy recently completed by the State Medical Examiner Office confirmed Howard’s death was a result of a homicide, the dispatch states.
