This is nothing compared to the numerous city pickups driving circles around Juneau everyday, or the millions spent on the bronze whale. Let this one go buddy, there were hundreds of people that enjoyed it.
Actually the city/state because of chemicals now uses salt to de ice.
I think if you consider the amount of effort and destruction that goes into mining the minerals used in fireworks, this sort of casual use of them is too extravagant. Really what is the point? That people enjoy them? Well people enjoy drinking and driving to but its wrong for a host of reasons.
Because toxic chemicals are ending up in our environment should not be a green light to add more. Where we can do something to prevent the release of toxins in our environment we should. I do not like the idea of chemicals showering down on my property or the loud explosions near my house.
Juneau has always had a controlled public display of fireworks downtown at 11pm on July 3rd. As a community, I would like this to be the extent of firework use in Juneau.
Its time for CBJ to address the growing use of these toxic explosives in our community.
Your house must be pretty close to the lodge if its getting showered by chemicals. Just think of the mining that takes place for the items in your home, car, cell phone. Trying to be green is great but trying to stop an annual winter fireworks show because its "damaging" is ridiculous. I'm sure the deer were bedded down and enjoying the show like everyone else up there!:) Get a life cat.
We do not need a firework show at the lodge to have a winter celebration, it is totally unnecessary and extravagant. Dog poop is toxic guess what - fireworks are to.
Downsouth light shows are replacing fireworks. This would be a good alternative.
In the middle of winter, with all the critters around?? Blowing up money??
@Hans - You might think twice about exposing your 3 year old to that level of noise. Loss of hearing is a lifelong handicap. Kids are going to have a hard enough time in the future. You might want to watch your child over the next few days, look for signs of hearing loss or pain. If you notice any signs check with your doctor right away. Firecrackers gunshots, or other explosions create powerful sound waves that can rupture your eardrum or damage the inner ear. This is called acoustic trauma. The result can be immediate and may result in permanent damage and hearing loss. Nothing like a child being set up to fail in school by Dad or CBJ.
Why? I mean really. Isn't it bad enough that fire-works are set off over the channel every year? Is that whats happening? More mining means more use of explosives? All the more reason to be against mining. What a waste.
I'm so glad I moved to Oregon, not so much confined BS. You all are so puny, toylike. I am happy Eaglecrest puts on a fireworks display. Peace out Darell Braman
The issue I have with this is all the people in Juneau, including the poor, have to pay taxes so the city can run the ski area for the wealthy citizens who have disposable income. Adding fireworks is just putting tax money up in smoke. Really rather tacky, don't you think? If Eaglecrest was private, and the profits were so great that they could spend some profit for the fireworks, fine. But that is not the case.
Darell76 - you moved to oregon ha, really?? Oregon law bans possession, use or sale of fireworks that fly, explode or travel more than six feet on the ground or 12 inches into the air.
I don't go up the hill in winter because you're suppose to have chains or 4WD; I don't have either. Was this for Juneau's special people or did they provide transportation for everyone who wanted to see the show?
Reading this article, I am wondering if we have some people who just suck at sarcasm or are seriously the most awful, hateful and miserable people on the face of the planet. WTH happened to the town I fell in love with two decades ago? Where did you negative, hateful people come from?
I'm with you Roger. This event didn't cost the CBJ anything. It was fully sponsored by local businesses. It was open to everybody. You didn't even need a lift ticket to see the show because it was at the base of the mountain. And I can gaurantee that food and beverage sales were significantly higher than average the day of the show, so the event likely generated more revenue than it cost. How about this...let's cancel every single community event. Maybe that will make some of these people happy. And while we're at it, let's close Eaglecrest, Centennial Hall, the libraries, both pools, all the parks, ball field, Tredwell Ice Arena and stop all maintenance on all the trails throughout Juneau. I've about had it with some of these ultra-negative people. You can't do anything good in this town without these people complaining about something.
Snagger, you could ride the snow bus. I didnt go, but my kids did. Said it was great! Thanks to the folks who paid for the fireworks. It is nice to have an occasional outburst of fun...
Local businesses fund the entire event, so just stuff it already. Your tax dollars aren't going to the fireworks. If you didn't make it because you didn't have a ride, you certainly could have found someone willing to provide one. The bus runs you up there and enough friendly folks around to drop you back off after the show.
Here's an article from Juneau Empire laying out how the city DOES NOT fund this event:
What is with people in this town? Do all the bums comment on Juneau empire or do we have an unproportional amount of boobs living here compared to other parts of the world? And if you don't approve of recreational opportunities in this town, move... please.

Something's wrong......
Any environmental consequences with fireworks in the forest? Any sort of assessment required? Some reallly clean creeks flow from that area.
Deer?
Were any deer frightened by this event ? Deer, especially, pregnant does are under a lot of stress this time of year.
Unbelievable
