Man pleads not guilty to child porn charges

Nicholas V. Miller appears in Juneau Superior Court on Thursday.

A Juneau man is scheduled to stand trial in May on 14 felony counts of possessing and distributing child pornography.

Nicholas V. Miller, 38, who was indicted last month, made his first appearance in Juneau Superior Court on Thursday and pleaded not guilty to five counts of possession and nine counts of distributing the illegal images.

His lawyer, defense attorney Julie Willoughby, entered the pleas on his behalf and requested a jury trial.

Judge Louis Menendez, filling in for Judge Philip Pallenberg who is assigned to the case, scheduled the trial to begin on May 20.

Prosecutors say law enforcement officers seized approximately 1,000 images and videos depicting child sexual exploitation from his computer and related digital items at his home in July 2012. The seizure was result of a four-to-five month long investigation by several agencies.

The case is being prosecuted by Marika Athens, the statewide cyber crimes prosecutor with the Office of Special Prosecutions and Appeals in Anchorage.

Miller was previously released on bail, and he is next scheduled to appear in court for an omnibus hearing on April 8.

This Day in Juneau History: Jan. 19, 1987

On Jan. 19, 1987, with revenues half of what they were the year before and an estimated budget deficit ranging from $700-$900 million, the 15th Alaska Legislature began working on the state’s enormous budget deficit. Everyone was present for the Legislature’s first day except for Sen. Frank Ferguson, D-Kotzebue, who resigned shortly after his election because of health problems. Taking his place was Kotzebue businessman and Native leader Willie Hensley, whom Gov. Steve Cowper appointed for the position until the 1988 elections.
