New trial date set for multiple home invasions suspect

Joseph A.S. Allen, 30, slated to stand trial in September
Joseph A.S. Allen, 30, appears in Juneau Superior Court on Thursday for a status hearing.

A new trial date has been set for the Juneau man accused of a string of home invasions in 2011.

Joseph A.S. Allen, 30, is now scheduled to stand trial on Sept. 9 with a new attorney, Christopher Cyphers with the Office of Public Advocacy.

Allen’s previous attorney, Assistant Public Defender Timothy Ayer, withdrew from the case last week when he realized he had an undisclosed professional conflict of interest. OPA handles the cases the Public Defender Agency cannot, and was appointed to represent Allen.

Allen is charged with breaking into six homes in November and December of 2011.

Police say in one of the instances, he encountered a woman at home with her two children, threatened her with a gun and used physical force to rob her.

He is facing a total of 15 felony charges for robbery, burglary, theft, vehicle theft and assault.

The jury trial, which has been postponed twice since he was indicted by a grand jury in September 2012, is slated to last 10 days. He remains in custody at Lemon Creek Correctional Center.
