Sonny Musser, right, and Josh Hintermeister work to put up a protective wall around the foundation where the former American Legion Building was at the corner of Franklin and 4th Street on Monday. The building, built in 1940, was torn down over the weekend. The building's owner, Hugh Grant, said "I needed to get it down before someone got hurt." The building was originally the Bethel Tabernacle Building, then was used by the Juneau Independent newspaper from 1952 to 1959. The building also housed Alaska's first Department of Transportation, a couple of restaurants and was last used by the American Legion. Grant said he had no plans for the property yet.
