Editor's Note: Travis Lies has since been cleared of all of these charges. A jury acquitted him on all counts following a two-week long trial in Juneau Superior Court in August 2014.

A 22-year-old Juneau man was charged last Friday with raping and assaulting a woman he knew in May 2012.

A grand jury convened by the Juneau District Attorney’s Office indicted Travis Logan Lies on one count of first-degree sexual assault for knowingly engaging in sexual penetration with the alleged victim without her consent.

That’s an unclassified felony that can be punishable by up to 99 years in prison.

He is also facing first-, second- and third-degree assault charges for allegedly causing her physical injury and placing her in fear of physical injury with his hands. (First- and second-degree assault are felonies punishable by up to 10 and five years in prison, respectively, and third-degree assault is a misdemeanor.)

The indictment states the incident took place somewhere in Juneau on May 6, 2012. No other details about the case were available since grand jury proceedings are confidential, and no probable cause documents were filed. Both District Attorney David Brower and Lies’ attorney Assistant Public Defender Eric Hedland declined to comment for this article.

Lies was arrested after the indictment was handed up, and he is currently being held at Lemon Creek Correctional Center. Electronic court records did not indicate when he is next scheduled to appear in court.

Electronic court records show Lies has two prior misdemeanor convictions that stemmed from an incident in June 2012. Prosecutors said at the time that he drunkenly smashed an Cadillac Escalade pickup into a condo complex in the Mendenhall Valley. He narrowly missed hitting a sleeping resident in the condo, located at 9550 Glacier Highway, by about 10 feet, according to police reports.

Lies pleaded guilty in August to driving under the influence and reckless endangerment, and a third misdemeanor charge of leaving the scene of an accident was dismissed by prosecutors in a plea deal. Court records show he was sentenced to serve 240 days in jail with 210 days suspended plus two years probation for the DUI conviction, and 30 days flat for the reckless endangerment conviction.
