City ponders sending almost $25 million to JSD

The City and Borough of Juneau Assembly introduced an ordinance Wednesday night that would provide a substantial portion of the Juneau School District’s fiscal year 2014 operating budget.

The city’s $24,904,400 disbursement would bring Juneau’s school budget up to $93,967,200. CBJ’s portion is spent on general operations, student activities and busing among other expenses.

The Assembly is required to provide the district at least a minimum distribution amount by the end of April. After that, the amount can increase but not decrease.

The Assembly referred the ordinance to its Finance Committee for further deliberation. A public hearing is scheduled for April 22.
