School lunch price to rise to $3.50 a tray

JSD staff involved in student knockout on leave

Juneau students could have to pack an extra quarter for lunch money next year as the price for trays jumps to $3.50.

Juneau School District Director of Administrative Services David Means mentioned the price increase during a presentation to the JSD Board of Education Tuesday night. The district is working out a contract with NANA Management Services LLC to provide food services for Juneau’s schools.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has levied the price increase to bring paid school lunch prices in line with federal reimbursements for free lunches, currently $4.63. Lunch prices will rise by 10 cents a year for more than a decade.

“Whether it is 12 years down the road 15 years down the road they will catch up,” Means said. JSD may opt to raise prices by 25 cents every two years, rather than 10 cents each year.

The contract is expected to cost around $972,000 for breakfasts, lunches and snacks.

Also discussed was a recently surfaced from an Oregon football camp that allegedly shows a coach knocking out an incoming Thunder Mountain High School incoming freshman football player.

JSD Superintendent Glenn Gelbrich said the district has asked the City and Borough of Juneau for help in its investigation of the incident. The city assigned an independent investigator, he said.

“There are enough questions about what happened what was involved who knew and why it took nine months to find out about it,” Gelbrich said.

Oregon law enforcement is also involved in the investigation.

“Let those entities do their work,” Gelbrich said. In the mean time the district has placed all involved staff on leave “as a means of ensuring objectivity. This is no indication of fault.”

When facts come forward the district will conduct personnel evaluations, Gelbrich said.
