Police say misconstrued threat led them to respond to Valley home

Posted: April 17, 2013 - 4:20pm  |  Updated: April 18, 2013 - 12:11am

Police responded to a Mendenhall Valley home at about 6:10 p.m. Tuesday night after a 26-year-old man who police said was drunk reported his roommate had threatened him with a gun.

Police say it turns out the threat was interpreted mistakenly and no crime was committed.

“The intoxicated person misconstrued what they saw,” Juneau Police Department spokesman Sgt. Chris Burke said Wednesday. “No gun was pulled on anybody, pointed at anybody, anything like that.”

Burke said the 26-year-old and one of his five roommates, a 39-year-old man, were arguing about the noise level in the house and the dogs when the 39-year-old reached for a gun on a shelf.

The 39-year-old-year old, who was sober, told responding police officers that he was putting the gun away to hide it, a story that was corroborated by other people in the house at the time.

“The intoxicated person misconstrued that and thought he was being threatened,” Burke said.

The 26-year-old left the residence in the 3600 block of Tongass Boulevard and called 911 as he was walking on nearby Short Way. At least three police vehicles rushed to the scene within minutes in response to the report.
