Mayor proclaims this week National Public Safety Telecommunications Week

The police and fire departments gathered Wednesday morning to thank Juneau’s public safety dispatchers as part of National Public Safety Telecommunications Week.

Mayor Merrill Sanford delivered a proclamation expressing gratitude to the 911 call-takers, dispatchers, trainers and technicians who work tirelessly — and often behind the scenes — to help during emergencies.

The Juneau Police Department said in a release that dispatchers contribute to the apprehension of criminals, suppression of fires and treatment of patients all the while exhibiting compassion, understanding and professionalism.

The U.S. Congress has designated the second full week of April as National Public Safety Telecommunications Week since 1991.
