A longtime local fitness instructor is hosting a free Zumba class on Sunday to benefit the AWARE (Aiding Women in Abuse and Rape Emergencies) shelter in Juneau.
Kristin Mabry has held similar Zumba fundraisers and ‘Zumbathons’ for other local organizations in the past, but said she wanted to host this one for AWARE in April since it is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
“We’d love to pack the whole house,” Mabry said. “The whole purpose is to have fun and just support the community and AWARE.”
The hour-long event will start at 5 p.m. Sunday, April 21, at Mabry’s new studio Mountainside Wellness located at 418 Harris Street on the fourth floor of the Articorp Building above the charter school.
There will be a social component to the class, too, Mabry said. An AWARE representative will be there to talk to participants, and snacks will be on hand.
The class is open to people of all ages, genders and ability level. Participants are encouraged to wear tennis shoes and to donate what they can to AWARE.
Zumba incorporates fitness moves into traditional Latin dances and rhythms.
The drop-in rate for a Zumba class at Mabry’s studio is usually $10, but that fee will be waived for the fundraiser.
Mabry said the fundraiser is coinciding with other deals and free classes this weekend as part of the open house for Mountainside Wellness.

Also for Sexual Assault Awareness Month, AWARE is hosting an art exhibit at Rockwell from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 20. The exhibit will feature works of art that celebrate healing, and its theme is “Reclaim. Renew. Rejoice!”
Rockwell is located at 109 S. Franklin St. in the old Elk’s building downtown.
