Two teams from One People Canoe Society are set to depart Douglas Island Wednesday in canoes with the goal of paddling all the way to Wrangell.
The Alaska Native organization called on the community for donations of water, supplies and nonperishable food items for their voyage down to Wrangell in an announcement on Facebook.
The canoers are traveling to Wrangell for the rededication of a tribal house on Shakes Island that has been undergoing extensive renovations. That ceremony is set to begin May 2, the expected arrival date of the canoe teams.
The launch event is set for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sandy Beach in Douglas. One People Canoe Society is asking for any donations to be given by 10 a.m., when the canoers will be loading their gear at Douglas Harbor.
According to One People Canoe Society in its announcement, the teams from Juneau and Yakutat will be accompanied for parts of their voyage by other canoe teams.
