School board votes to rejuvenate world language curriculum

The Juneau School District Board of Education approved a motion to rejuvenate its world language curriculum by adding instructional materials for several languages that were being taught with obsolete materials.

The district’s current world languages curriculum, including books, materials and strategies, has not been reviewed since 1992.

Spanish, French, Russian and Tlingit materials would be updated, at a cost of $50,000, to all secondary schools.

“I think that this is worthy of adoption,” said Boardmember Barbara Thurston.

The motion passed unanimously.

“We would like both of our high schools to be world class places with a quality education that would prepare you for college and for a different career tracks if that’s your choice,” said board Vice President Sean O’Brien. “I’m not sure if two high schools of our size can do all of those things, but I think between the three high schools they can do them all.”

The board also considered a revision to current school policies that would allow non-student participation in extracurricular school activities.

The “Home School Law” Alaska Statute that will go into effect July 1, permits students enrolled in alternative education programs and accredited home schools to participate in high school interscholastic activities.

The revision would amend current policy and will go before the board next Tuesday for further review.
