JIA Board seeks local candidates for Airport Manager

The Juneau International Airport Board of Directors continues their search for a new Airport Manager with an eye on local candidates.

“There are some pretty talented people locally and within the state of Alaska,” said Ron Swanson, one of the board members. “I think we waste a lot of money and time bringing people from out of state.”

Deciding to look locally and statewide will save money and attract candidates familiar with myriad intricacies that the airport here faces.

“We would like to find someone tuned in to the way things are here and the way the operation of the airport is,” said Joe Heueisen, a board member. “Snow removal, for example, is a much bigger deal here than, say, in Florida.”

The search could last anywhere between now and the end of the summer, according to Swanson.

“We want to get on with it as soon as possible,” said Heueisen.

Jeannie Johnson, the current Airport Manager, submitted her letter of resignation last week and will step down May 15.

Johnson “did a heck of a job. She brought in a lot of money and she had good relationships with our senators and congressmen in Washington,” Swanson said. “She’s been very good financially and she’s a politically savvy person.”

Deputy Airport Manager Patty DeLaBruere will serve as Airport Manager in the interim.
