AUGUSTA, GA — Morris Publishing Group, LLC announced Friday the appointment of Rustan Burton to publisher of the Juneau Empire.
Burton’s media career began at The Anchorage Daily News in 2008 where he had various positions including retail sales manager. “Our family is thrilled to have the opportunity to experience another adventure in Alaska. Alaska is incredible and its people are some of the best I have known,” said Burton. “I have a passion for newspapers and I am excited to be a part of an industry that is changing in so many dynamic ways. I am looking forward to meeting the people in Juneau and finding new ways to promote the community.”
Burton has visited Juneau and lived for a time in Sitka, where he served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Burton said he believes newspapers “have a bright future and a real, dominant place in communities as well.”
He said he looks forward to getting to know the Empire’s staff and its readers and advertisers in the community.
Burton starts June 10 and will report to Les Simpson, regional publisher for Morris Publishing Group, LLC, and publisher of the Amarillo (Texas) Globe-News.
“Rustan is a smart, energetic leader who is a rising star in our industry,” said Simpson. “He also loves Alaska and will serve the community well. We are lucky he’s chosen to come work in Juneau.”
