LEGO League battles at the Baranof

More than 30 spectators watched teams battle at the Baranof Hotel Friday night, but this was no ordinary fisticuffs.

There were no gloves, no blood. Instead, there were battle cries, batteries, wires and LEGOS.

The FIRST LEGO League Corporate Challenge, held in part by the Juneau Economic Development Council’s Science Technology Engineering and Math program, boasted five teams and their robotic counterparts competing against one another in matches that pitted wits against technical know-how.

The teams — Legomaniacs, Alaska Robotics, DHSS, Integrity Real Estate Inspectors, and Dads 1.0 — fought for the highest score through 10 matches. The final two teams, Alaska Robotics and Legomaniacs, went against each other in a no-holds-barred elimination round to determine the top bot.

This year’s point winners were the Legomaniacs, who reclaimed their title as champs. Alaska Robotics had dominated the elimination round.

Every year, 1,500 Alaskan students participate in the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology LEGO league where they compete in seven qualifying and two championship robotics tournaments.
