Vehicles illegally parked near Auke Bay Harbor may be impounded

JPD: Increased enforcement effective Saturday

Police say they will begin enforcing parking laws more strictly in the area of Auke Bay Harbor, where they have seen an increase in parking violations.

Juneau Police Department Lt. David Campbell said vehicles — trucks with trailers, in particular — have been parking in the tow-away zones on Back Loop Road between the De Hart’s intersection and University Drive.

“Parking in the tow-away zones in this area can pose a safety risk to motorist (sic) trying to access Back Loop Road from side streets and driveways,” Campbell said in an information release.

Last weekend, the vehicles parked illegally were just ticketed. But beginning on Saturday, June 22, Campbell says vehicles illegally parked in the tow-away zones in the area will be subject to being impounded.

“JPD strongly encourages the public to not park in the tow-away zones near Auke Bay Harbor,” Campbell said. “Any vehicle impounded over the weekend will not be available for release until JPD business hours the following Monday. Additionally, the owner of the towed vehicle will be issued a citation and will have to pay impound fees.”
