Woman bear-maced, robbed on Saturday

Police still seeking 44-year-old male suspect

Juneau police are searching for a man who sprayed a woman with bear-mace, then robbed her outside the Chinook Apartments on Saturday.

Police responded to the apartments at 9160 Cinema Drive at about 1:25 p.m. Saturday, but the suspect had already fled the scene.

Witnesses watched him drive away in a brown truck, which police later located at Carroll Place and seized as evidence, Juneau Police Department spokesman Lt. David Campbell confirmed in a phone interview Tuesday.

The 44-year-old male suspect, a Juneau resident, was believed to be staying at the Carroll Place residence temporarily, but he could not be located, Campbell said.

The 28-year-old woman reported to police that she was outside the Chinook Apartments with other people nearby when the man drove up, maced her, stole her purse and sped off. The purse contained the woman’s cell phone, an undisclosed amount of cash and miscellaneous items. She declined medical services on scene.

Campbell said the man and woman know each other, but it was not a domestic relationship. Police are not releasing the man’s name since he has not been arrested or charged with a crime.

“It was reported as a robbery, we are treating it as a robbery, items were taken forcibly from another person,” Campbell said, “and now we’re just trying to find the guy.”
