A California-based entertainment public relations firm will be hosting a magic show in Juneau next month to benefit the local firefighters union.
The second annual event will feature magician and illusionist Antawn Towner, who will be entertaining at the Alaska State Fair later in August.
Fundraiser Coordinator Gary Greene, of Sports & Entertainment Group of California, Inc. (S.E.G.), said this is their way of “bringing the Alaska State Fair to Juneau.”
“It’s a nice family event,” Greene said.
S.E.G. has a branch office in Anchorage and makes donations to organizations by hosting events in and out of state, he said.
Online records show S.E.G. is registered as a paid solicitor with the Alaska Department of Law, as required by law for any group soliciting contributions in Alaska.
The firm held a similar fundraiser last year at Centennial Hall in Juneau and raised about $2,000 for The Juneau Career Firefighters Association, Local 4303, said union president and Capital City Fire/Rescue firefighter Noah Jenkins.
Jenkins says the monetary donation goes into the union’s “benevolent fund,” which is reserved for people in need, whether they be firefighters and their families or other members in the community seeking assistance.
Jenkins said 40 CCFR members, including all of the career staff, are Local 4303 members.
This year’s event, titled “Las Vegas Magic & Illusion Spectacular,” will take place at 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 17 at the Juneau-Douglas High School auditorium. Tickets are not being sold yet, but they will be later this month, Greene said.
Greene pledged a minimum donation of $1,500 to $2,000 to the union this year. He said Local 4303 will receive all the proceeds after the payment of event expenses, which includes payment for the magician, airfare, facility rental, printing, media advertising and event staff.
