Preparations for the upcoming school year are underway. The Juneau School District announced late Wednesday the appointment of interim employees.
Suzie Cary will begin this fall as the interim principal of Riverbend Elementary School on a one-year contract.
Kristin Bartlett, chief of staff of the Juneau School District, said that Cary has already been a part of the education system here.
“In this case we found someone that was interested in coming here and had been in the Juneau School District before which was great,” Bartlett said. “She comes very highly recommended by teachers in our school district.”
Cary worked in the district from 1981 to 1999 as a reading specialist and elementary teacher, and as principal of Harborview.
“Whenever we can find someone people are familiar with and someone who is familiar with our community it’s always beneficial to our students and staff,” said Bartlett.
The position opened in June when Shannon Avenson, the former principal, accepted a position in Minnesota. A nationwide search for a permanent principal will begin in spring 2014.
Also joining the district is Michael Grubbs, interim Human Resources director.
“My wife and I are simply thrilled to have the chance to live in Juneau, continue our careers, meet new friends, and be a part of such a beautiful place,” Grubbs said in a statement. “I personally look forward to meeting each and every employee and conveying to them my support in our partnership of advancing and continuing the great work of this district in preparing our students for success after graduation.”
A former classroom teacher, Grubbs has a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Arizona, a Master of Arts in Educational Administration from San Diego State University and a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science from San Jose State University.
