Snow storage proposal moves to Assembly

Plans to expand the snow storage area at the Mendenhall Glacier are moving forward.

Originally tabled at the last meeting of the City and Borough of Juneau Planning Commission, the conditional use permit and city project review was taken up at its meeting Tuesday and passed without opposition.

The plan now goes before the Assembly.

At the last meeting of the Planning Commission, Community Development Director Hal Hart and staff felt uneasy moving forward with the proposal. Further information was sought, along with a request from the U.S. Forest Service, to delay until further information was provided on environmental impact.

Public testimony from the Gastineau Aeromodelers Society worried that the proposed use of the area would impede on their recreational activities there. The society has an airstrip aside the parking lot where remote controlled airplanes take-off and land.

The snow storage site passed the commission unanimously. Commissioners Bishop and Bennett were not in attendance.
