Tour the USCGs only operational heavy ice breaker

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star invites the public to tour the U.S. Coast Guard’s only operational heavy ice breaker during their open house Saturday, Aug. 3, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the AJ Dock in Juneau.

The tour of the Polar Star is free to the public. An adult must accompany all children and no pets are allowed aboard the cutter. Coast Guard crewmembers will be standing by to answer questions about the 399-foot icebreaker and their most recent operation in the Arctic Ocean.

The Polar Star is homeported in Seattle and was commissioned in 1976. Its primary mission includes supporting scientific missions in the Arctic and Antarctic. Additionally, the Polar Star is capable of other missions such as search and rescue, ship escort, environmental protection and the enforcement of laws and treaties in the Polar Regions.

Parking for the tours will be available in the AJ Dock parking lot.
