After several years with an interim director of marketing, Goldbelt Incorporated has hired into that role a full-time employee dedicated to promoting the Mount Roberts Tram and Goldbelt Hotel.
Joann Flora was hired by Goldbelt as its director of tourism marketing. She started work at the beginning of June.
“A lot of people come to Alaska multiple times,” Flora said. “Many of them, their first experience is on a cruise ship, and realize how much they didn’t get to do because there’s a schedule they have to keep.”
Then they come back as independent travelers and, according to Flora, capitalize on getting to experience things they didn’t have chance to do on their last trip.
“Getting that personal contact with people is really important,” said Flora. “It’s not just important to the trip they’re having right now, today, but it’s important to future trips they’re going to have.”
Marketing a product like the Mount Roberts Tram is multifaceted, according to Flora, who works extensively with the cruise ship industry, selling tram passes and advertising the opportunities that exist beyond a tram ride.
“The Mount Roberts Tram experience is exactly that. It’s a total package of experience,” Flora said.
“I think it’s a real benefit to local people because of everything it has to offer,” Flora said of the tram. “It’s a jewel for Juneau.”
Flora has 30 years experience in sales and marketing. Before moving to Juneau, she was the community director for Big Brothers, Big Sisters in Ketchikan and, before that, spent 11 years with the McDowell Group doing visitor research.
Flora said she was happy to be living in Juneau and excited to become part of the community.
