Coast Guard medevacs cruise ship passenger to Sitka hospital

A 72-year-old woman having convulsions was airlifted from a cruise ship in Southeast waters to a Sitka hospital Thursday evening.

The Coast Guard said in a release that a Sitka-based Jayhawk helicopter crew responded to the 952-foot cruise ship Diamond Princess in Icy Strait and safely transported the woman to Sitka Community Hospital.

Coast Guard watchstanders at the 17th District command center in Juneau received the request for the medevac sometime Thursday evening, the release stated. The woman’s name was not released.

Icy Strait is located about 100 miles north of Sitka.
