Public invited to tour Coast Guard cutter Tuesday

The U.S. Coast Guard is inviting the public to tour the Seattle-based Cutter Mellon in Juneau on Tuesday.

The tours will be taking place during an open house at the Coast Guard Station Juneau pier from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 24.

The tour is free and is a chance to meet members of the crew, who will be on hand to answer questions about the cutter and its missions, according to a press release.

All children must be accompanied by an adult. Animals are not allowed.

This day in Juneau history: Feb. 19

On Feb. 19, 1987, Gov. Steve Cowper and the Alaska Legislature formed a budget plan for the upcoming year. The House Finance Committee passed a bill giving Gov. Cowper permission to spend the $428 million reserve fund, and representatives described meetings with Gov. Cowper “wonderful”.
