Alaskan Brewing Co. brings home international awards

The brewery won two silver medals at a competition in Germany

Out of more than 1,500 entries from around the world, Alaskan Brewing Co. won silver medals for its Alaskan Oatmeal Stout and Alaskan Smoked Porter at the European Beer Star competition Sept. 18 in Munich.

Co-founder Geoff Larson was in Germany to accept the awards. Thirty-seven medals were given to U.S. brewers, according to an Alaskan Brewing Co. news release.

This is not the first time either beer has won in its category at the Munich competition: Alaskan Smoked Porter took home the gold in 2010, company spokesman Andy Kline said.

The international competition is on par with Denver’s Great American Beer Festival, “the Superbowl of beer awards,” in which Alaskan Brewing Co. will compete next month, Kline said.

The local brewery will have 10 beers up for judging, the most any one brewery can enter, Kline said. Alaskan Smoked Porter seems to be the company’s lucky charm.

“That beer happens to be the most award-winning beer in the history of the Great American Beer Festival,” he said.

Alaskan Brewing Co. has entered the competition every year since 1986, when the company was established. And they’ve done well, Kline said.

“For a small brewery, we’re definitely the most awarded in the history of the competition,” he said.

But, despite the brewery’s success, “we never take these awards for granted; it’s always a really big deal when we’re recognized nationally or internationally,” Kline said.

This year, Alaskan Brewing Co.’s Smoked Porter, Oatmeal Stout, Freeride APA, and Hopothermia, among others, will be judged.

ESB, a draft discontinued in 2007, will also compete this year. The brewery is bringing the popular beer back for a stint starting in January 2014, Kline said.

“It’s super Alaskan, and people really identify with it,” he said.

A lot of people have missed ESB since it was taken off the shelves, but it will only be brought back as a seasonal selection, Kline said.

“People have to stockpile it,” he said.
