83-year-old driver strikes post office with vehicle

An elderly man trying to park his car at the Mendenhall Post Office Thursday accidentally hopped the curb and struck the building, causing an estimated $3,500 worth of damage, police said.

Post office employees said the collision shook the building, cracked the outer wall and left a noticeable dent on the inner wall.

The 83-year-old man declined to be taken to the hospital despite reports from medics that he was disoriented from the crash, which took place at about 11:20 a.m. Thursday.

Police spokeswoman Erann Kalwara said the man was not cited for the incident, and the police investigation is closed out.

His compact vehicle, a 2012 Subaru Impreza, sustained about $1,500 in damages.

His name was not released.

The manager on duty at the post office, which is located on Vintage Drive, could not be reached for comment as she filled out accident reports. An employee said this isn’t the first time a driver has misjudged a parking spot there and slammed into the front of the building.

“This is like maybe the third, fourth time,” said the employee, who declined to be named.

The parking spaces allow drivers to pull up just a few feet away from the front of the building, with only the width of a sidewalk in between.
