Absentee ballots cement Troll's lead

All the ballots have been counted, and the result will almost assuredly be Kate Troll serving as Juneau’s second Areawide Assembly member.

The end result was Troll’s initial lead growing by 230 votes.

The Canvass Board has been reviewing question ballots — votes that need to be certified for accuracy to ensure the voter is registered to vote here and that the ballot was correctly counted — and absentee ballots since Tuesday’s election.

The official results will not be unveiled until Tuesday of next week, but challenger Bill Peters’ hope to overtake Troll’s election-night lead by winning big with absentee voters was squashed Friday.

“My congratulations to Kate — I hope she serves Juneau well,” Peters told the Juneau Empire in a text message.

He was non-committal on whether he plans to run for the Assembly again in the future.

“Not sure I’d run again. We’ll see...,” the text message continued.

Early voters favored Troll over Peters 514 to 300, bringing the final tally to 2,515 votes for Troll and 1,990 votes for Peters. The impact of the late additions to the tally didn’t surprise Renee Rieser who has been helping with city elections since 1997.

“Normally it stays the same,” Rieser said of the race lead. “It doesn’t change a whole lot.”

After adding the question and absentee ballots, the final turnout sits at 19 percent — seven points lower than the previous low for voter turnout in a regular Juneau Municipal election.
