JUNEAU — The state health department, as part of its effort to reduce childhood obesity, wants to know what policies Alaska schools have for physical education and recess.

The department is seeking a contractor to survey all school districts and determine the strengths and weaknesses of their policies, compared to the national standards for physical activity identified by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The project has a $40,000 budget. A report would be due next March.

The goal of the study, according to a recent solicitation, is to see how Alaska policies compare to the national standards. The department says policies for P.E., recess and physical activity can improve lead to improved health for children.

An estimated 26 percent of Alaska high school students are considered overweight or obese.
