Mary Lou Spartz answers questions after the reading of “The Real Story of the Sinking of the Sophia” at the Alaska State Museum on Saturday. Spartz wrote the play, noting it was a work of fiction built upon “fact, myth and gossip,” but remains based upon the actual story of the sinking of the Princess Sophia, a steamship that sank in nearby waters on Oct. 25, 1918 after hitting Vanderbilt reef in Lynn Canal. All 343 people on board were lost, making it the worst maritime incident to ever occur in Southeast waters. Spartz narrated the play and recruited eight local actors to perform the parts.
