Wash. man wanted for escape arrested at Juneau hotel

Police say Russell Bond, 49, is being held at Lemon Creek Correctional Center

A 49-year-old man wanted for escaping community custody in Bellingham, Wash., was arrested Sunday night when Juneau police broke up a hotel party.

The Juneau Police Department said in a release that Russell Bond was arrested on an extraditable warrant out of Washington and that he is being held at Lemon Creek Correctional Center without bail.

The arrest came after police responded to a 7:55 p.m. phone call Sunday from the Driftwood Lodge requesting help in removing five drunk people from one of the rooms. Police said the other four people were removed without incident.

The warrant alleged that Bond escaped from custody in connection to an assault with a deadly weapon case from 2009.

Dona Bracke, the Whatcom County, Wash., prosecutor who handled that case, said Bond served a six-month prison sentence for getting into a fist fight that escalated into a knife fight.

Bracke said Bond pulled a knife on the victim and cut him or her on the neck, an injury that required 70 sutures/stapes to close.

“The two of them had only met a few days prior and it looks like they were just drinking most of the time,” Bracke told the Empire in an email exchange. “Fight started, according to the victim, because Bond demanded the victim take him somewhere and the victim refused.”

The prosecutor said after Bond served his jail time, he was ordered to report to the Department of Corrections offices for monitoring for 12 months.

“He probably didn’t do that, hence the warrant,” she said, noting the warrant was likely issued by DOC.

Upon his arrest in Juneau, police said Bond was additionally charged with being a fugitive from justice. That’s generally a place-holding charge to keep defendants in custody until they are extradited.

Juneau District Attorney James Scott said Bond was arraigned in Juneau court on Monday afternoon and that the judge set bail at $50,000. A status hearing in the case is scheduled for Dec. 3.
