Artist Delfin Decker paints cedar planks to form a wolverine screen at the Goldbelt Heritage Foundation office Thursday. The wolverine is the mascot of Dzantik'i Heeni Middle School and will be installed at the school next year.

Delfin Decker paints part of a wooden panel on Nov. 7 in the Goldbelt Heritage Foundation office that will hang in Dzantik’i Heeni Middle School. The panel features a formline wolverine — the school’s mascot — designed by Decker, 29, and will be completed once 13 DHMS students add their own painted footprints and flounders to the background.

Decker taught himself to paint after rheumatoid arthritis stopped him from playing sports at 18. Now using a wheelchair, he said he hopes to inspire the students he works with at the middle school to overcome life’s obstacles.

“I searched and discovered other abilities I have,” he said. “I got dealt a bad hand, but I look for the positive in the negative. I always stay positive — if you want something, work hard to get it.”
