Thumbs up to the Juneau-Douglas High School girls swim team for placing first in 2013 ASAA/First National Bank Alaska State High School Swimming & Diving Championships at the Dimond Park Aquatic Center on Saturday. Congratulations are also in order for individual winners from JDHS and Thunder Mountain High School boys and girls teams.
Thumbs down to Super Typhoon Haiyan that struck the Philippines Friday and Saturday, leaving a path of destruction and an estimated 1,200 people dead. Some experts are calling Typhoon Haiyan the strongest typhoon on record in the Philippines. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who lost their homes, and, more tragically, friends and family members.
Thumbs up to Audrey Hudson, who will become Metlakatla’s first female mayor in the Annette Island community’s 126-year history. Hudson won her seat last Tuesday by a margin of 11 votes. We wish you the best of luck, Mayor-elect Hudson, in leading Metlakatla and representing your constituents.
Thumbs down to Gov. Sean Parnell for dragging his feet on accepting federal dollars that would expand Medicaid coverage for an additional 60,000 Alaskans. A state-funded Medicaid expansion study is yet to be released by the Parnell administration. The public needs to know what is in the state report, not only because state funds were used to pay for it, but also because the issue as a whole could have a lasting impact on the health and wellness of thousands of Alaskans.
