Judge sentences rapist to 6 years in prison

FAIRBANKS — A judge has sentenced a 36-year-old Fairbanks man to six years in prison for sexually assaulting a 21-year-old intoxicated woman.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported Dean Ranstead in May 2011 attended a party at a home, entered a room where the woman was sleeping and raped her. He pleaded guilty to second-degree sexual assault.

Superior Judge Michael McConahy on Monday rejected defense attorney Mike Stepovich’s request that the incident be classified as a “least serious” example of second-degree assault, which would have allowed sentencing by a three-judge panel.

Ranstead apologized in court and said he has abandoned “alcoholism” and “womanizing.”

The victim attended the sentencing accompanied by a service dog that she said was prescribed for post-traumatic stress disorder.

She objected to listing the crime as “least serious.”
