In a close race, Eaglecrest Ski Area defeated Revelstoke, B.C., to become the Great White North champion of Powder Magazine’s Ski Town Throwdown. The ski area has now moved on to the competition’s Final Four.
In the Elite Eight competition against Revelstoke on Wednesday and Thursday, Eaglecrest won 5609 to 5536.
Eaglecrest previously competed in the Sweet Sixteen against Red Mountain Resort, B.C., on Monday and Tuesday, winning 4805 to 4593. Red Mountain was last year’s Throwdown champion. Powder Magazine called Eaglecrest’s Sweet Sixteen victory “one of the biggest upsets of the entire tournament.” This is Eaglecrest’s first year in the competition.
“The ski area out of Alaska has a thing for taking down big dogs,” said the Elite Eight matchup preview, which included information on Eaglecrest and Revelstoke.
After voting closed Thursday, Revelstoke posted on its Facebook page, “What a run to the finish line that was! Amazing job everyone to keep the race as close as it was in the final hours!!”
They also sent “kudos” to Eaglecrest.
As Great White North champion, Eaglecrest will compete against the “Big East” champion Dec. 2 and 3. The Big East champion will be determined next week, either Mount Bohemia in Michigan or Mad River Glen in Vermont.
