DBA, city partner up for Gallery Walk block party

For the first time, the city is closing down Front Street to vehicle traffic during Gallery Walk on Dec. 6 for the Bundle Up Block Party, a new community event aimed at highlighting downtown businesses.

The Downtown Business Association has the go-ahead from the City and Borough of Juneau to shut down the street from 4 to 9 p.m., DBA secretary Sydney Mitchell said. Quite a few businesses will be providing free treats and live music, and DJ Manu will spin a mix of modern music and holiday favorites outside, Mitchell said at Wednesday’s DBA board meeting.

The DBA wanted to make it easier for Gallery Walkers to get around downtown that night, Mitchell said in an interview Tuesday. If the event goes well, it could clear the way for similar block parties in the future perhaps for Mardi Gras — and will bring downtown businesses more income during the off-season, she said at the meeting.

She said Tuesday she hopes the event will augment the already popular Gallery Walk.

“There’s always complimentary treats, and it is such a good, cheery experience,” Mitchell said. “Even if the weather’s bad, we just put on our coats and come anyway. It’s small town America alive and well.”
