Bartlett Regional Hospital hopes to have a new permanent CEO on the job sometime in early May.
“There’s a lot of moving parts, so the earliest we anticipate (naming a new CEO) is the beginning of May,” said Mila Cosgrove, human resources director for the hospital. “Of course, it’s going to depend too on who’s picked and when they’re available to start.”
The CEO search committee met Friday to discuss the process and work on the ideal time line. The coming of the summer tourism months is not a factor in the timing of the hiring, she added.
“The role of that committee is to narrow the pool of applicants down to a top three or four to take through a lengthier process,” Cosgrove said. “And to take a look at compensation structure moving forward.”
The group is looking to add members to its search committee, including people from medical staff and from the community, she added.
“The thinking is to broaden the number of individuals who touch the process so we make sure we’re getting the right person in the door,” Cosgrove said.
Work is now underway on building the compensation package that will include the CEO’s salary, benefits and bonuses.
The board is looking for a highly specific skill set to fill the position, Cosgrove said.
“When you’re looking for an executive type position, you’re looking for people who are able to balance the business acumen side — so they understand the medical field and the ins and outs, it’s a complex legal and regulatory environment,” Cosgrove said. “You have to know enough about the practice of medicine to be effective.”
Another component of the search is finding a candidate willing to move their entire family to Juneau and invest in the community.
“They’re also looking for someone that’s going to be effective working with a board — that’s a whole set of skills,” Cosgrove said, “and, of course, someone who’s going to be a leader in the community; to be the visible face of the hospital.”
