UAS professor wins teaching award

Julie Hamilton, University of Alaska Southeast assistant professor of accounting, has been awarded the University of Alaska Foundation Harold T. Caven Professorship, a $20,000 award meant to build the business and finance departments within the state university system.

Hamilton, who has 25 years of experience in accounting, will use the award money to “provide real-life experiences in tax preparation to her accounting students,” a UAS news release stated. She’ll prepare her students for providing community tax preparation services through the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites, according to the release.

Hamilton worked for 10 years at the Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation as its controller and chief financial officer before coming to UAS two years ago, the release stated.

The professorship was established in 1974 by Loretta Caven in memory of her husband, Harold T. Caven, a former vice president of First National Bank of Anchorage.
