Juneau woman indicted for welfare fraud

A 31-year-old Juneau woman has been indicted for welfare fraud.

A Juneau grand jury on Friday charged Linsey Marie Knight with felony theft and three counts of misdemeanor “unsworn falsification” for applying for benefits for which she was not eligible from November 2012 through October 2013, according to the indictment.

Chief Fraud Investigator for the state of Alaska Division of Public Assistance Christopher Lauer said Knight is alleged to have stolen about $8,560 in benefits by falsifying information. He did not say from which welfare program was involved, citing the ongoing prosecution of the case.

Knight declined to comment when reached by phone on Monday morning. She is slated to be arraigned on the charges next month.

Second-degree theft is a class “C” felony that can carry up to five years in prison, while second-degree unsworn falsification is a class “A” misdemeanor that can carry up to a year in prison.

Indictments are formal accusations of illegal activity, and they are not evidence of guilt. Cases are presented to the grand jury each Friday.
