Driver loses control downtown, hits Wharf, empty tour bus

JPD: Faulty brakes to blame

Police said a driver lost control of his vehicle in downtown Juneau on Monday night and struck The Wharf building, a tour bus and almost hit an officer on foot patrol.

Despite the potential for injury, no one was harmed in the incident, police said. Only minor damage was reported.

The Juneau Police Department said in a statement that the 1989 Pontiac Grand-Am experienced brake failure while traveling down Main Street around 8:15 p.m. The driver attempted to turn left at the light onto Egan Drive, but the vehicle ended up on the sidewalk and struck the big blue Wharf building. The vehicle kept going on Marine Way until colliding with a tour bus that did not have any passengers in it, police said.

A JPD officer on foot patrolling Marine Park was nearly hit by the vehicle and detained the occupants after the car came to a stop. The driver, whom police identified as 21-year-old Marcus Worthington, was cited for operating an unsafe vehicle, as well as failing to carry proof of insurance. The vehicle was impounded.

Police said alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
