False alarm: No meth lab found in Juneau apartment

Posted: May 9, 2014 - 12:13am

Talk about housemate problems.

A 23-year-old Juneau woman authorized police to search her apartment after she found what she thought was a meth lab in her housemate’s bedroom. It wasn’t a meth lab.

The report, which came in at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, prompted Juneau Police Department officers, Alaska State Troopers and the Capital City Fire/Rescue hazardous materials special team to respond to the house in the 1800 block of Northwood Drive.

Lt. David Campbell, a spokesman for the department, said JPD patrol officers were the first on scene, smelled chemicals in the room and secured the area. Campbell said the 23-year-old woman, who owned the apartment, then authorized a search of the home.

CCFR analyzed the items in question and found they were not hazardous and that it was not a meth lab, Campbell said.

The home was turned back over its occupants.

CCFR could not be reached for comment about the incident on Thursday afternoon.

Police said the original call came in through a 55-year-old woman, whom Campbell said he believed was the 23-year-old’s mother. The older woman expressed concern others were cooking meth in the apartment.

No other information was immediately available.
