Seniors 'dump' prank on JDHS

Something stank at Juneau-Douglas High School on Thursday.

The Foodland IGA was bustling with teenagers around noon Thursday, but it’s not because the store is the new hip hangout. According to Juneau-Douglas High School students, the school’s lunch area was closed while staff cleaned up a mess left by senior pranksters, causing students to eat elsewhere.

As a good-bye prank before they graduate Sunday, a group of seniors urinated and defecated in the school’s entryway, students said, as well as in sinks and urinals around the school. Another group also filled stairwells and a girls’ bathroom with balloons and some seniors cemented some of the school’s doors shut.

The prank happened Thursday morning, Juneau School District chief of staff Kristin Bartlett said.

“It was discovered early and JDHS staff, including Principal Paula Casperson and (administration assistant) Pam Tippits, along with Juneau School District maintenance staff, responded quickly to clear and clean the area,” she said in an email. “It took about 45 minutes to clean up and it was addressed before classes began this morning.”

The entryway rugs that had been soiled were moved to the commons to be cleaned, causing the area to be closed for a while, Bartlett said.

“The issue has been resolved and there was no threat to student or staff health or safety,” she said.

JDHS assistant principal Kristy Germain said the prank “wasn’t a safety concern.” She didn’t comment on whether there are consequences for the students responsible.

Germain said she wasn’t sure if a prank of this sort has ever been committed in years past. Not every class of seniors pulls a prank, she said. It’s customary for graduating seniors to write their class year on the street near the school.

“That’s something that typically happens every year,” she said.
