USFS: Use caution when visiting Mendenhall Lake, Glacier

JUNEAU — Juneau Ranger District Ranger Brad Orr, in a press release Friday morning, is asking people to be aware and cautious when visiting the Mendenhall Lake and glacier area. The water level is rising in Suicide Basin.

“Kayakers and rafters should stay away from the glacier face,” Orr said. “Hikers should watch for waves from calving and be aware of water conditions if on the Nugget Falls Trail. Mendenhall Campground and Nugget Creek Trail may be closed if officials determine the water is rising to a critical level.”

The U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Geological Service, the National Weather Service and City and Borough of Juneau are monitoring the water level. The Suicide Basin Lake Level Gauge may be viewed at http://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?wfo=pajk&gage=jsba2.

For more information, contact the Juneau Ranger District at 586-8800 or the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center at 789-0097.
