Police need help ID'ing this man

Police are searching for a man who allegedly pocketed a gold nugget worth almost $5,000 from a jewelry store in downtown Juneau last week.

The Juneau Police Department and the Juneau Crime Line released two pictures of the suspect on Friday in hopes that the public can help identify him.

The images were taken from surveillance camera footage of the Front Street store, the name of which was not disclosed. The footage shows a man who appears to be in his 60s, wearing faded blue jeans, a dark-colored jacket over a button-down collared shirt and a baseball cap. His face is not in focus, but the image shows his overall build.

Police said an employee reported that the man took the nugget from a display case at about 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 10. The release states the man tried to get the clerk’s attention, but then put the nugget in his pocket and left the store.

The store employee also told police that the same man made a purchase at the store the day prior under the name George Bentsen. JPD says they have been unable to locate anyone with that name in Juneau.

Anyone with information about this or any other crime can report a tip to the JPD at 586-0600 or to the Crime Line online at juneaucrimeline.com. Tipsters are guaranteed anonymity and can be rewarded up to $1,000.
