Auke Bay Elementary has new principal

After joining the Juneau School District as an elementary teacher in 2003, Nancy Peel has quickly risen through the ranks, as JSD named Peel the new principal of Auke Bay Elementary School this week.

The decision came after the school district interviewed her and four other candidates March 15. Peel has been an instructional coach at the school district since 2013, serving both Auke Bay and Gastineau Elementary Schools in aiding professional development and implementing curriculum.

Peel takes over for Lori Hoover, who is retiring after 10 years as principal. Peel will begin her tenure for the 2017-18 school year.

Peel, who has a Masters of Arts in Teaching from the University of Alaska Southeast, has also worked as Ski Director at Eaglecrest Ski Area, working with students of all ages. She is excited to take the position, and Superintendent Dr. Mark Miller is confident she’s right for the job.

“Nancy is an experienced JSD employee who has effectively served in an instructional leader role at Auke Bay for the past four years,” Miller said in a release from JSD. “We look forward to building on the improvement that Auke Bay is showing in meeting the needs of all students.”
