Kick cancer at the Relay for Life

Cancer patients can’t stop because they’re tired. Neither does the Relay for Life, an annual fundraising event for cancer research that takes place Saturday, July 15 at the Wells Fargo Dimond Park Field House.

From 6 p.m.-midnight, teams of volunteers will walk the track at the field house to celebrate the American Cancer Society’s fundraising efforts throughout the year. The walk, which is free for everyone, is meant to symbolize the fact that cancer survivors cannot stop on their journey to recovery.

Several fun events are scheduled during the walk, including corn hole, potato sack races and a silent auction. The theme for this year is “Kick Cancer off the Board,” and revolves around board games.

According to the ACS’s Hannah Ray, Juneau ACS fundraisers have raised $300,000 in the last five years, which is a lot for a community of its size. ACS coordinates with different groups throughout the year to conduct fundraisers, such as a tattoo drive, a holiday store at the Nugget Mall and a wine tasting event.

Donations to ACS will be accepted to the event. All proceeds go to cancer survivors and research.

Volunteers are still needed to plan next year’s event, Ray said. To learn more about the Relay for Life and ACS, visit or call Ray at 273-2077.
