Longtime volunteer honored by Assembly

Donna Denton, a longtime volunteer and a founding member of the Friends of the Juneau Public Library Amazing Book Store, was recognized by the Juneau Assembly Monday for her years of service.

Paul Beran said she’s been volunteering since around 1984 and that she’s the only founding member of the book store still in Juneau.

“She still continues to line up volunteers,” Beran said.

Denton organizes the roughly 70 volunteers, who sort, price and shelve books or work the desk at the book store.

The Amazing Bookstore spun off from semi-annual book sales from books the Juneau Public Libraries no longer needed, but with the dedication of Denton and others, it “just keeps growing,” Beran said. “The space basically doubled in size.”

In the proclamation delivered by Mayor Merrill Sanford, The Amazing Bookstore and, through their hard work, its dedicated volunteers have “contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to meet extra library needs.”

“Whereas the vision across almost 30 years has not dimmed, but is now becoming reality, a new city-owned public library in the Valley with the Friends of the Library Board, contributing the unheard amount of one million dollars, make possible by the Amazing Book Store,” reads the proclamation, before concluding with the resolution to recognize and thank Denton for her “tireless and lasting contribution to the people of Juneau.”

Beran, who is the chairman of the board of the Friends of the Library, said Denton is “very reluctant to get publicity on this.”

“She’s not shy on lots of things, but personal recognition, she’s very withdrawn on that one,” Beran continued.

The board recommended Denton be recognized as a surprise.

Beran also wanted recognition for the support Denton’s husband, Gavin, has contributed.

Friends of the Juneau Public Libraries is a non-profit organization that assists the library with special projects. Funds raised by the Friends go toward special gifts and grants to Juneau’s three municipal libraries. The group operates “The Amazing Bookstore” in the Airport Shopping Center. The bookstore offers secondhand books at bargain prices. All profits go to support the Juneau Public Libraries. Friends also sponsor the annual summer reading program, the annual bookmark contest and the Authors-to-Juneau series.
