Organization Description: Alaska Community Services is under the umbrella of the National Senior Corps. Each year 500,000 persons age 55 and older meet a wide range of community challenges through three programs: the Foster Grandparent Program, the Senior Companion Program and RSVP.

Volunteer Opportunity: Volunteers in the Foster Grandparent program serve one-on-one as tutors and mentors to young people with special needs. Listen to a child read, mentor or help with homework. There are many locations, needs and opportunities.

Foster Grandparents serve from 15 to 40 hours a week and receive hourly stipends. They must be 60 or older, meet established income eligibility guidelines. In addition to a stipend, they receive other benefits.
