Editor’s note: This is part of a series of profiles about students recognized as ‘Outstanding Graduates’ in the 2011 University of Alaska Southeast (UAS) class. The UAS 2011 commencement will be held at 2 p.m. May 1 at the UAS Recreation Center.

More than 35 years after receiving her first college degree (a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1975), Teri Robus will receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art from UAS, and is now recognized as the University of Alaska Southeast’s 2011 outstanding graduate in humanities.

Robus was inspired to take art classes due free time and her love of art.

“I decided to get my B.A. because my husband’s job takes him out of town a lot,” Robus explained. “I’m a personal trainer at the Alaska Club, so that keeps me busy too, but not too busy. I started taking art classes whenever I could and then in 2008 they offered the Bachelor of the Arts degree in Art at UAS.”

Robus has enjoyed making art since childhood.

“I became interested in art because my mom took me to oil painting lessons when I was 13 or 14,” she said. “And I never forgot it. I love [painting]; I think it is because I had a taste of it when I was young.”

For Robus, the key to being a good artist is opening your mind to new things and learning as much as possible.

“I love learning,” she said. “I think it helps your art to learn about other things. It helps the brain!”

Robus’ love of learning has led her to be a model student, bringing new information to the table for students as well as instructors.

“Teri has been an absolute pleasure to work with,” said Jane Terzis, Associate Professor of Art and Chair of the Humanities Department at UAS. “She brings a passion for learning into the classroom that is contagious. Whether Teri decides to focus on studio art or to work for an institution, I’m confident that she will continue on with a successful, satisfied life.”

UAS’ 2011 spring commencement will be held at 2 p.m. May 1 at the UAS Recreation Center.
